Maintenance and common sense!

AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) technology became popular in the early 1980s as a sealed lead acid battery for military aircraft, vehicles and UPS to reduce weight and improve reliability. As technologies advanced, these batteries quickly became available to the general public. They are now the industry standard battery type for caravanning and camping, and will continue to be for years to come. But how can you ensure you are maintaining and getting the longest life out of your battery?

AGM Deep Cycle batteries love being fully charged for as long and as often as possible, without being overcharged. So as long as you have a regulated source of charge keeping your batteries topped up you won’t have to worry about overcharging. It is important to make sure you do not store your battery in a discharged state as it can cause sulfation, which will reduce the capacity of your battery. These are just a few of the main tips to keeping your battery healthy.

To make it easier for you we have compiled a list of Do’s and Don’ts.

  • Keep your battery as fully charged as possible as often as possible
  • Use regulated sources of charge
  • Use ‘Smart’ battery chargers
  • Use fused devices
  • Keep your battery out of the weather and away from liquids
  • Monitor the batteries health occasionally
  • Ensure your battery terminals are free of corrosion and have a solid connection

  • Store your battery in a discharged state
  • Drain your battery below 50% depth of discharge
  • Leave your battery in any spot that will reach more than 60 degrees
  • Apply a load larger than 20% of the batteries capacity
  • Short the terminals of the battery
  • Use your AGM as a starting battery for any vehicle

If you follow these simple Do’s and Don’ts your battery will have a long life and will be able to power your devices on any of your adventures.
